Bridgewater Grille

Perched high above the sidewalk on the corner of one of Washington Avenue's busiest intersections, the The Golden Hotel is actually a restaurant inside The Golden Hotel. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the Bridgewater Grille's dining room and provide a panoramic corner view of the street.

When I arrived at Bridgewater Grille, the skies were turning grey, and by the time I sat down, the snow had started to fall heavily. The restaurant was almost completely empty. I could hear a few voices chatting in the bar/ smoking dining room, and a group of senior citizens was just ending a friendly luncheon when I was seated nearby. My waiter greeted me with some sort of Middle European accent and told me that today was his first day on the job.

I debated between pancakes and French toast, and unfortunately, my greenhorn waiter could not tell me which tasted better or which was more popular with the customers. I blindly picked the French toast.

As I sat waiting for my food, I turned around and saw that the town's activity was now frozen in the timelessness of slowly falling snowflakes. Vehicles were passing very slowly, and the few people who had been on the streets had now vanished. I overheard the restaurant manager talking with some of the bored staff about whether to close early or send some of them home. The snow was only coming down heavier, and apparently he had also heard that some of the other businesses in town had already closed due to the worsening weather. I never heard what decision he made, but I a young family of five was seated shortly before I left, so I guess they hadn't decided to close as of my departure.

My French toast arrived rather promptly, I assume because the chef didn't have any other orders to cook. My opinion of the taste was that it was just typical French toast, nothing special, nothing horrible, and nothing that I would make a point of ordering again.

Now that I was eating and facing back towards the center of the dining room instead of the expansive windows, I examined the details in the room for the first time. The decor has a very clean look, with simple lines and black accents on a warm yellow background, yet with a slight western flair hinted at by things such as the stars on the walls between the windows. Perfectly folded matching yellow napkins sat like individual centerpieces for each place setting. Everything seemed “just so” except for the brightly colored carnival-esque sticks of sugar stacked in the center of each table.

Overall, my brunch was quiet, relaxing, and enjoyable. Since Bridgewater Grill servers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I would be interested to come back during a more typical setting and sample some of their other food.
