Blue Canyon Bar & Grill

Tucked around a corner behind Starbucks, just off of the main strip of Washington Avenue is perhaps Golden's most contemporary restaurant, the Blue Canyon Bar & Grill. I saw advertisements for this bar in lots of places, and on prior visits to town I had seen a steady stream of people coming and going from the small doorway on the side of the building. One day after work, I made a special point of going there during happy hour.

I opened the door and could only take about three steps inside before getting caught up in the thick of the crowd that had packed this place like sardines in a can. I couldn't even see the far walls of the room to tell how big the place was or why there was an abnormally high concentration of people jammed into one corner that appeared to be serving as a makeshift stage. I could only assume that since the time of day was happy hour, the stage corner must be doubling as some sort of free food buffet area.

The people and the music were extremely loud, and this was not the type of environment that I was in the mood for at the time. As quickly as I had taken three steps in, I turned around and took three steps out, and I did not return to the Blue Canyon Bar & Grill for weeks.

Perhaps my initial experience had left me feeling a bit uneasy, but at the end of my stay in Golden, I felt that out of all the major places that I had visited in Golden, I had unfairly left out the Blue Canyon Bar & Grill. On my very last afternoon in town, I made a last-minute decision to give this bar another chance. The time of day was about 3PM on a drizzling Sunday afternoon, and once again, I pushed open the door.

Immediately, my experience here was a yin and yang difference from my last time. Two people were sitting at the bar on ultra-contemporary bar stools, and one other person was sitting at a table. The rest of the room was completely void of people. The room itself was actually quite larger than my first visit left me thinking, and now I could clearly see that indeed, the far corner was a makeshift stage that appeared to be set up for karaoke.

The menu here covers a wide range of foods, with a slight emphasis on Americanized Mexican fare. I was impressed by the food offerings because I was under the impression that this was more of a bar than a restaurant, but this menu was serious—it wasn't just nachos, pizza, and mozzarella sticks—this menu has dinner salads, entrees, burgers, and sandwiches.

My aunt and I debated between an appetizer of beer-battered onion rings and sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries weren't actually listed on the menu, but somehow we saw or heard something about them being offered, and were intrigued enough to consider this debate at length. At the waiter's recommendation, we chose the onion rings, and upon tasting them, we were a bit disappointed. In my mind, I was comparing them to the onion rings that I had at the Buffalo Rose, and these were not nearly as good. Neither of us was very hungry, but the onion rings left us feeling dissatisfied, so we ordered a side of sweet potato fries too. These hit the spot! That first bite of the sweet potato fry was like a small flavor explosion in my mouth! These fries were deliciously addicting, so we finished the basket rather quickly. My only regret from my time spent in Golden was that I did not visit this restaurant during mealtime more often. The menu has enough enticing items to make me want to go back again and again.
